The jury unanimously awards Best Director to Zhaxi Qingpeng for The Third Child. He tells a story that is deeply human, close to daily life and universal in its reach, recording the everyday of one family with a moving, delicate and poetic eye, and demonstrating a very high level of craft in image, sound, narrative and editing.

To my mind this is the most mature of the films, both in its storytelling and in its camerawork.

2025 · 2nd Edition

The second edition was staged together with the Donghai International Documentary Masterclass Camp in Shitang, Zhejiang — a stone fishing town on the East China Sea known as “the Notre-Dame of the East”. Twelve of 502 entries reached the final round, and five jurors decided the outcome after four hours of debate.
