Born in 2001, Liu Yuting was the youngest director in the first selection. Hers was the most argued-over film of the preliminary round: shortlisted and cut several times over, it was only added back at the last moment.

The first edition called for entries from Chinese-language filmmakers worldwide and received 688 films. Rather than award conventional places, the jury created an Extraordinary Award and gave it to three authors of singular independence and force.
